But I thought it would be a good idea to post about horsey-people issues that many of us come across.
Some of these thing may also affect our mental health to an extent too !
Let’s take a minute or two to think of things like :
- your mindset and motivation
- setting goals
- competition stress
- media content
- and not to forget the many let-downs you might encounter with riding or owning a horse
Everyone who has been in this ‘game’ for a while can relate to most of these issues, and only the few with a very strong mental health and positive view on things can be strong enough not to let it affect them in a negative way.
I mean : Only a few can be strong enough to keep positive most of the time… no-one is perfect, so I am sure the ’strong ones’ have bad days too! And for sure that is just fine ! No-one said you should be perfect all the time, because out of imperfection we learn ;-)
I know as well as any other motivated rider that keeping a positive mindset is not always easy. We all have set-backs and disappointments.
But it is something you can actively work on, so that’s good news ! Right?!
Having a bad day is ok, but we need to learn to let it go and move forward, and not let it take over.
Everyone may have a lesser day, or a lesser period of things getting to you more than they should.
Yep, even me. (And I’m the positive one here)
But just try to picture the 'bad days' as an elastic pulling you back.
The good thing about letting go is,… it’ll shoot you forwards
I know I make it sound very simple. But just so you realise, that this is something you too can work on and achieve.
We all love our horses, and we love the sport… or the interaction we have with our horses.
But even those who don’t compete get confronted with the same things as competition riders too.
(Yes, ok-ok-ok. They don’t get competition stress, … Like some of us do. Hurray for them)
But riders and horse-owners are so busy taking care of the horses, … we sometimes forget ourselves, and that we TOO need support sometimes.
That’s why I can’t state enough...
if you have dark clouds hanging over you,
if you are stuck in your training,
if you are unhappy,
if you are frustrated because nothing’s going right…
if life just seems to SUCK because it’s always YOU who has bad luck, or your horse that gets injured.
Don’t bottle it up !
Go to someone that can help you with this.
A trainer, a parent, a friend… a sports psychologist.
Who-ever you need at that time to help you understand your feelings, and perhaps help you see it from another point of view and work through it.
It takes a really tough cookie to be a rider, and an even tougher cookie that keeps up riding long-term ! Because over the years we have lots of heart-ache, dissapointements, set-bakcs to get over.
But there’s nothing quite like the sweet scent of your horses breath,
his soft muzzle tickling you,
and the sound of munching horses to make this day the best one of you life !
That's why we can't live without them !
